En octobre 2020, après une consultation citoyenne, la ville d’Asbestos, située au Québec, s’est rebaptisée « Val-des-Sources ». Ce tournant dans l’histoire de cette ancienne communauté minière, qui exploitait jadis l’un des plus grands gisements d’amiante au monde, exprimait le désir de renoncer à une industrie qui a été sa raison d’être depuis cinq générations.
Si une majorité demeure en faveur de cette décision symbolique, d’autres personnes conservent, malgré tout, un attachement profond envers la culture minière dans laquelle elles ont grandi et prospéré, devenant, au fil des ans, une part intégrante de leur identité.
Ce livre photographique est le deuxième volet d'une enquête documentaire qui s'est amorcée avec la réalisation d'un film. Ces deux projets, échelonnés de 2016 à 2025, visent à documenter l’effritement de la culture minière d'Asbestos pour en préserver la mémoire.
In October 2020, the citizens of Asbestos voted to rename their community Val-des-Sources. This former Quebec mining town used to exploit one of the world’s largest asbestos deposits but now chose to turn its back on an industry that had been its very purpose for five generations.
While most residents were in favor of this symbolic decision, others nevertheless retained a profound attachment to the mining culture in which they had grown up and thrived, to the point that it had become an integral part of their identity.
This photobook is the second installment of a documentary inquiry that began with the production of a film. Both works, made between 2016 and 2025, aim at documenting the decline of Asbestos’s mining culture while also preserving its memory.
